He travelled to the US and beyond with his message that people, like the rubber tappers and Indigenous Peoples, can live with and from the forest in harmony. He was the country's first Prime Minister and held that position from September 24, 1973 until his fatal car accident under suspicious circumstances on July 7, 1978. Mendes had received death threats for years before his murder. He was portrayed by actor Raul Julia in the 1994 film The Burning Season.
